The
sunset view looking to the Mountains from The Mountain View
Loft, Mountain View Room, and the back porch. |
Welcome
to the Bridgewater Mountain
Bed and Breakfast web site.
We
hope you'll choose to stay with us after looking over the resources
we have to offer. We are open for the 2008 season April 15th.
(Winter reservations may be made by special arrangements with
the hosts.) We look forward to sharing this special spot with
you.
BMB&B is a small family bed and breakfast, providing hospitable
and personal service within a house which has been our family’s
vacation home for nearly 60 years. Originally an 1847 working
farm, the old house was architecturally re-designed and rebuilt
recently to incorporate the charm of the old as well as comforts
possible only with new features: air conditioning,
and large rooms with scenic window views. We’ve
created two rooms with private baths, and an en suite loft apartment
for our visiting guests.
Bridgewater Mountain Bed and Breakfast
is ideally situated in central New Hampshire, minutes from Interstate
93 in a secluded
high country
setting with a sweeping view of mountains to the north. Located
just four miles off Exit 24, it is also within the state’s
Lakes Region, convenient to countless recreational opportunities
that
define the Granite State.
Our property is located beside a country road with little traffic
to interrupt the serenity of this lovely spot. The house and barn
are surrounded by forests and stone walls, stately sugar maples,
hillside fields, fruit trees, and organic flower and vegetable
gardens. Our nearest neighbors are family members who have built
seasonal homes. Behind us a panoramic view stretches out forty-five
miles to Franconia Notch and the White Mountains.
We invite you to share this place of natural beauty, inspiration
and retreat with us. It calls to the work-weary, the creatively-inclined,
and those yearning for privacy and simple pleasures. It can also
be a destination location for a mini-vacation, or home base to
returning alumni or the parents of students at nearby private
schools (Holderness School, New Hampton School, Tilton School)
or Plymouth State University. Parents of young people attending
several summer camps, particularly those a few miles away on Newfound
Lake, will also find us very conveniently located.
ACCOMMODATIONS
| |
 |
| |
The
Dining room of the main building where breakfast is served
during the cooler months. |
BMB&B offers the Meadow
View Room and Mountain View Room in the main house,
and an en
suite loft studio facing the mountains. Each guest space
has a full private bath, king or queen-size bed, ceiling fan, and
air conditioning. (AC is seldom needed at this elevation, but you
make the call.) The
Mountain View Loft with King
bed also includes a kitchen, living room with a fold-out futon couch
for additional sleeping space, and a separate entrance ideal
for extended stays by writers, musicians, artists, photographers, and
those seeking private living space.
The two guest rooms in the main house are upstairs, and share
an upper hall sitting area and refreshments corner. On the main floor
there’s
a gracious living area with a fireplace, comfortable furniture, and
antique desk for writing postcards. The adjacent breakfast area features
family china and an antique round table which seats 10 or more. Finally,
there’s
the back porch a
family favorite for all sorts of activities. Newly enlarged with a choice
of screens or glass for changing weather, it features comfortable wicker
furniture,
a raised hearth fireplace, and our incredible view of flowers, fields,
and the mountains. Breakfast happens here on sunny days, and afternoon
naps are
encouraged.
Spectacular sunset views are best from the porch, too.
MODERN TECHNOLOGY
House rooms and the Loft are wired for cable television and high-speed
internet service. You can borrow a portable TV/DVD player for your
room if desired, and we have a collection of movies and music CDs to
choose from. Each room has a radio/CD player.
AND THEN THERE’S BREAKFAST
| |
 |
| |
Breakfast
on the back porch... Looks like fresh fruit, homemade donuts
and strong coffee are on the menu! |
A full breakfast is included in the daily rate, provided in the main house
between 7:30-9:00 am, other hours only by special arrangement. (Please notify
Tom or Virginia of any special dietary requirements when registering.)
Breakfasts can be as simple or extensive as you wish, with emphasis on
the latter! Offerings will include one or more hot entrees featuring
local eggs
from free
range chickens, country sausage and bacon, maple syrup sugared right
here on the mountain, and organic fruits and berries from Virginia's
gardens in season.
Homemade doughnuts, fruit pies and wild blueberry muffins and pancakes
are frequently on the menu, as well as Virginia’s fabulous homemade granola or Tom's own Seville marmalade, which he sells on the side. Excellent coffees, English and herbal teas, fresh fruit, and juices round out the perfect breakfast at Bridgewater Mountain B&B.
AREA ATTRACTIONS
If you must, there are many diversions nearby. Golf, biking, antiquing, auctions,
galleries, fairs, fine dining, mountain climbing and hiking, swimming and boating
abound. The Squams and Newfound Lake are less than ten miles away, Winnipesaukee
a bit further. The university’s cultural events and the summer-long New Hampshire Music Festival are fifteen minutes away. And if visiting New Hampshire’s tourist attractions is your thing (Everybody does, at least once!) they’re a reasonable drive in any direction. On the map we’re
the geographic center of our small state.
ABOUT YOUR HOSTS
| |
 |
| |
The
front of the Main House as viewed from the road. |
Owners Virginia and Tom Slayton
and their two sons have known and cherished this lovely spot for many,
many years as a family seasonal vacation retreat.
When
we decided to retire from our busy work lives several years ago, no
other place was even considered as home for the rest of our lives.
We’ve
returned to our roots, with a conscious decision to share our pleasures
with others who appreciate
simple
country living, if only for a few days at a time!
Virginia is now a professional watercolor artist and her work – paintings,
prints, and cards – can be seen at BMB&B
and at a nearby gallery. She is also a graphic designer who, in her
previous life, published a magazine and created printed materials for
professionals,
organizations, and businesses. Virginia has also worked as a mental
health administrator and
a consultant to early childhood day care centers during their early
days in New Hampshire. If there is anything she loves more than art,
it is organic
flower
and vegetable gardening. A NH-certified Master Gardener, her interests
are evident everywhere.
Tom, a New Hampshire native, recently concluded a career in communications.
He has been a newspaper journalist and photographer, college PR practitioner,
public
affairs director, and communications specialist associated with colleges,
government agencies and not-for-profit organizations. His post-retirement
passion has
been converting “the farm” from its previous incarnation to the comfortable
retirement home we share with our guests. Tom enjoys woodworking, photography --all photos on this site are his, music, and
tinkering with all things mechanical.

HOUSE RULES AND GUIDELINES
| |
Pets and Allergies
To ensure that our guest rooms remain free of allergens for everyone, we ask
that you not bring your pets here. If you’re traveling with pets, kennels in
the area will board pets by advance reservation. We’ll provide phone numbers,
if needed. We love animals and, in fact, have several, but they are never
allowed near guest rooms. They do visit the public areas, however, so if you
have dog or cat allergies, consider packing your allergy medicine and/or plan
to breakfast on the porch. (Bella, our Labrador retriever, relishes country
walks and endless fetching, if you’d like a temporary surrogate. The cat usually
has outside work to do.)
Children
Generally speaking, BMB&B is not suitable for children under the age of eight,
whose needs could lessen the pleasure of other guests. Likewise, we would not
be an appropriate spot for adolescents in need of constant stimulation, especially
the noisy electronic variety. Families with younger children may stay in the
Mountain View Loft apartment, which offers privacy from other guests.
Smoking
We provide a smoke-free environment for our family, friends and guests.
Dates of Operation
BMB&B will be open this year from mid April until the end of October.
Reservations during the winter and early spring season may be made by special
arrangement with the hosts.
Arrival and Departure
Check-in is between 3-6 pm; check-out is before 11 am. Please notify us if other
arrangements are necessary to accommodate you.
Amenities
Laundry service for guests doing extended travel is available. Please ask us
about other personal services. We want you to be comfortable, and to recommend
us to
your friends!
Payment
Advance reservations require one night’s deposit or 50% of a stay more than
two days, with the remainder due upon check-in. We accept MasterCard, VISA,
Traveler’s
and personal checks, and all rates are USD. The 2008 “high season” is from
May 15th to October 30th. |
| |
|
RESERVATION AND CANCELLATION POLICY
A deposit equal to 50% of your visit confirms your reservation (full payment
for one-night stays). The remainder is requested upon arrival. We accept Visa,
MasterCard, Traveler’s and personal checks. Rates are USD.
In the event of a cancellation, your deposit minus $20 will be returned if
we are notified at least 14 days before arrival. If less than 14 days, the
entire deposit is forfeited. If you wish to reschedule you may do so at no
cost. Full rate will be charged if guests do not arrive, come after the reservation
date, or depart before the final date of confirmed registration. All deposits
are credited to the last night(s) of the reservation period and will be forfeited
in case of early departure.
TRAVEL
DIRECTIONS & CONTACT INFO
Bridgewater Mountain Bed and Breakfast is located five miles from Exit
24 off
Interstate 93. We’ll provide travel detail with your confirmed reservation via
email or snail mail. PLEASE bring these with you for guidance, and DON'T rely
on MapQuest, Google, GPS or other computer mapping sources. These don't work
well in our rural area because their road maps are not current and Bridgewater
is mostly wilderness! Trust us, or the experience of a few past guests who didn't!

Thank you for
your warm hospitality to us on our wonderful visit to New
Hampshire. We
also visited Boston and Vermont, but staying at your B&B
was truly the highlight of our trip. We really hope to return
again someday. We are still bragging about it to our family
and friends.
As I mentioned to you, the bed in
The Mountain View Room was the most comfortable bed I've
ever
slept in.
I loved it, as well as
the sheets, quilt and comforter. In fact, I told my husband,
I want to buy those very sheets if I can. They were
the blue and white ones. If you don't mind, could you tell
me where you got them? They were really, great sheets!
– Rose
and Jack St. Louis, MO |
Just a short note
to say thanks for sharing your hospitality with us. We

at your house. Please be healthy ever and take care.
– Young-Mo South Korea |
Don't forget Bridgewater Mountain Studio...
We invite you
to browse through the artwork at the associated Bridgewater
Mountain Studio. Virgina K. Slayton is the artist. Many of
her works are available as original paintings.
| We would like to share our congratulations with our friend and
neighbor, Fanny Whitman, as she launches her Polarity Therapy
and Reiki Craniosacral Therapy Practice here on Bridgewater Mountain.
To learn more about Fanny's work, or to contact her for an appointment
you may visit
